The TWAS-SISSA-Lincei Research Cooperation Visits Programme aims to achieve two important goals:

Funding and Support

  • Travel expenses to Italy
  • Subsistence costs during your stay in Italy

The administration and financial operations of TWAS are carried out under an agreement with UNESCO, ensuring a smooth and hassle-free experience for selected candidates.

Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for this program, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be under the age of 40 as of December 31 in the application year.
  • Hold an MSc (or higher) degree.
  • Be a national of a Least Developed Country.
  • Hold a research position in a Least Developed Country.
  • Propose research projects aligned with sustainability science.
  • Women scientists are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Applicants already present in the host country are not eligible.
  • Only applications in specified scientific fields listed in the application form will be considered.

Host Institutions

Selected candidates will have the privilege of conducting their research at esteemed host institutions in Trieste, Italy. The eligible host institutions include:

  • International School for Advanced Studies – SISSA
  • International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology – ICGEB
  • National Institute for Nuclear Physics – INFN (only one host supervisor available: Prof. Andrea Vacchi)
  • National Institute of Oceanography and Applied Geophysics – OGS
  • University of Trieste
  • University of Udine
  • Materials Foundry-National Research Council – IOM-CNR
  • Area Science Park
  • Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste

Application Requirements

To complete your application, please provide the following materials:

  • A fully filled application form.
  • A copy of your passport (even if expired; only the page with personal details is required).
  • Your curriculum vitae.
  • A statement outlining your scientific interests and future research plans in sustainability sciences. Be sure to specify how your work aligns with the UN SDGs.
  • A comprehensive list of your publications (do not include reprints of articles).
  • A copy of your MSc (or higher) certificate.
  • A recent invitation letter obtained from one of the eligible host laboratories. This letter should detail the proposed duration of your visit (3 months) and the nature of your cooperation with the host institution.
  • Recent letters of recommendation from two referees familiar with your work. Please note that only signed reference letters will be accepted.

Application Submission

You can submit your complete application form, duly signed, to the TWAS Secretariat. Applications can be sent via email, but pages with signatures must be sent as scanned documents.
